NOCTURNE — A Garden That Plays Itself

A generative musical night garden. Plant seeds, and the wind plays them. Less a game than a toy you leave running, where the music writes itself.

Overview

NOCTURNE is a generative musical night garden. You plant seeds, and then the wind plays them. It’s barely a game, more a toy you leave running in a tab, and the point is that the music composes itself out of what you planted and how the garden drifts.

Plant a few things, let the wind move through them, and the garden turns into a slow, endless ambient piece that never repeats. Then plant a little more and listen to how it changes.

How it works

Each seed is both a plant and a note, or a small phrase. The wind is the sequencer, drifting across the garden and triggering whatever it passes, so the arrangement is a function of where you planted and how the breeze moves. Nothing loops on a fixed bar, so the music breathes instead of ticking.

What makes it interesting

  • The player is a gardener, not a musician — you place things and tend the space, and the composition is emergent
  • Generative by design — Web Audio driven by a drifting wind means it never plays the same passage twice
  • Calm on purpose — no score, no fail state, no clock, just a living thing that makes sound
  • Cause and effect you can hear — plant near the wind’s path for busy phrases, plant at the edges for sparse ones
